Food Fort Expands to New Neighborhood, Welcomes New Staff Member

Food Fort (www.lincolnfoodfort.com) is thrilled to have Wade Saddler as a new member of their staff this year. He came on board to help meet the demands of Food Fort’s new location, a neighborhood near West Lincoln Elementary School, where they expanded to in the fall of last year. Wade is fulfilling the “bus driver” position, which includes providing students transportation to school and enriching their lives with kindness. According to Food Fort founders, Ben and Michaela Akridge, he is exceeding all of their expectations.

Food Fort is a non-profit dedicated to serving children in unreserved neighborhoods. They are currently focused on serving three target neighborhoods in Lincoln: 29th and Holdrege on Mondays at 5:30 p.m., North Chester St. and West Dawes Ave. on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., and 13th and Saratoga on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.

Food Fort is thankful to have their own office space within Turbine Flats, which they moved into in 2018. This space is being used for both office work and expanding their ongoing tutoring program. To date, the organization has had an opportunity to serve just over 7,900 meals since the launch of Food Fort meals. The relationships they have built within these neighborhoods continue to change both the lives of volunteers and the entire Food Fort staff.
