Girls on the Run of Nebraska (GOTR, www.GOTRNebraska.org) was the featured nonprofit at the Governor’s Pre-game Tailgate before the Huskers played UNO on Volleyball Day August 30. Two Lincoln-area GOTR teams attended the event, with 500 other guests of Governor Jim Pillen. Coaches, parents and kids from St. Patrick Grade School and Humann Elementary School made a field trip to the residence, which included a pre-match meal and pictures with the governor and First Lady Susanne Pillen under the Girls on the Run arch.
GOTR combines lessons to foster social skills and character-development with fun running games to train for a 5K run at the end of each 10-week season. Led by two to three trained coaches, teams of 10 to 20 third- through fifth-/sixth-grade girls complete a nationally standardized confidence-building curriculum. Since its inception with 11 girls and two coaches in September 2003, Girls on the Run of Nebraska has expanded to serve more than 24,000 girls and 3,000 coaches at 100+ sites across the state.
Girls on the Run is celebrating 20 years of programming in Nebraska and recruiting coaches for the spring 2023 season, which will feature a brand-new curriculum version. Visit www.GOTRNebraska.org to bring GOTR to your school or to get involved.
