Girls on the Run of Nebraska (GOTR, www.GOTRNebraska.org) will celebrate its 20th anniversary this fall with friendship and 5K fun at schools across Lincoln and Omaha. More than 24,000 girls across the state have participated in GOTR since its inception with 11 girls in Lincoln in 2003.

Girls on the Run combines exercise, education and mentoring to build confidence and character in third- through-sixth grade girls. Teams meet twice weekly for two months to play running games that help train them for a 5K run/walk. Lessons on teamwork, decision-making and goal-setting are incorporated with physical activity, so participants get much more than exercise. The season highlight will be the Metro regional GOTR 5K on November 5 in Lincoln.

Volunteer coaches are needed for sites across Omaha and Lincoln. You don’t have to be a runner to be a great GOTR coach. Coaching is a rewarding short-term opportunity and you’ll have just as much fun as the girls. Training is required.
