As temperatures soared this summer, so did the number of people turning to Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (mtko.org) for meals and food pantry assistance.
Between January and July, Matt Talbot saw a 96% increase in visits to its Fresh Choice Pantry, including a 52% increase between June and July alone. Nearly 10,000 onsite meals were served to guests in July, the highest monthly total so far this year.
Matt Talbot is a community kitchen and outreach center serving individuals and families experiencing poverty, hunger, and homelessness. More than 3,000 people receive assistance through its hunger relief and outreach programs each year, with service numbers consistently peaking during the summer months.
While fresh food supplies are currently stable, Matt Talbot is in immediate need of canned meats, hearty soups, and cereal.
“More and more households are turning to our pantry each week to help put food on the table,” said Alynn Sampson, Executive Director. “We are committed to showing up for every family who needs support, and community donations help ensure our shelves stay stocked and ready.”
Businesses, community groups, and individuals can help by hosting a food drive or dropping off donations Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit mtko.org or contact Lori Wellman, Director of Development, at (402) 817-0621 or lori.wellman@mtko.org.
Serving lunch and dinner seven days a week, Matt Talbot is also open as a day shelter Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with extended hours during heat advisories. Guests can access meals, showers, laundry facilities, mail services, and connections to housing, substance use treatment, and other supportive services.
