Keep Nebraska Beautiful (KNB) (knb.org) attended Keep Cass County Beautiful’s annual Enviro-Fair, a sustainability education event for elementary school students, on Sept. 30. KNB staff taught over 180 fifth grade students all about food waste. They walked the students through every step in the process from farm to fork and how much is wasted along each step. Students came up with their own ideas and thoughts on how to combat food waste in their own homes and how to plan ahead for grocery shopping trips or food storage methods.
Many were surprised to learn that 40% of all food produced in the U.S. ends up in landfi lls rather than on our plates which made them more determined to do their part as Americans. The day was not just about food waste – from recycling to foraging to landfill facts, these student eco-leaders explored many ways to care for Nebraska’s future and KNB was privileged to be a part of it! The best part? Every child left ready to act!
For over 60 years, KNB has worked to enhance, preserve and beautify Nebraska. Other food waste programs KNB created include a Food Storage Guide and their quarterly ReFresh Newsletter. See
