Malone Community Center to Host Annual Juneteenth Celebration June 18

Malone Community Center (malonecenter.org) is inviting the public to join them on Saturday, June 18, for their annual Juneteenth celebration. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trago Park, located at 2100 U St. They will have food, live entertainment, fun for the kids, and booths from local organizations.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, dating back to 1865. It was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, TX with news the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Each year, the Malone celebrates this monumental moment of history. June 19, 2021 was the first year that Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday.

Over the past 66 years, Malone Community Center has diligently worked to honor and strengthen the African American community in Lincoln and Lancaster County by serving as a cornerstone for educational, cultural, and advocacy programs for all. At the Malone, they have several programs that are making a true difference in the lives of those they serve, specifically in additional educational opportunities. Those programs are Early Achievers Academy, Out of School and Summer Programs, High School Leadership Academies, Culler Middle School CLC, Malone Health Initiatives, and Maternal Wellness Programs.
