Nebraska Pork Producers Serve 250 Free Pork Burgers at People’s City Mission
On June 18, the Nebraska Pork Producers and the Nebraska Pork Checkoff Program grilled and served 250 pork burgers to supply a tasty lunch for People’s City Mission (PCM; www.pcmlincoln.org) guests and staff. It was a blessing not just to the guests of the Mission but also to the kitchen staff, who cook three meals a day, 365 days a year. The pig farmers from Nebraska wanted to share a meal with people who need it most and for the people who support the nonprofit every day.
The nonprofit People’s City Mission was started in 1907 by local churches, offering food and shelter for transient and impoverished men, women, and children. Today, PCM is Lincoln’s primary homeless shelter, housing 350 men, women, and children on an average day. They provide emergency and transitional housing to both men and families, including single mothers.
The People’s City Mission opened its Help Center in 1990, takes the donations that the community gives them, and distributes them to low-income families within the community, at no cost. Those donations include food, clothing, household items, furniture, toys, and personal-care items. In 2009, the PCM opened its Free Medical Clinic to provide free medical, dental, vision, and behavioral-health care to low-income Lincoln residents who don’t have medical insurance. Today, the Clinic sees more uninsured patients than any other medical provider in the city. For more information or to donate to PCM, visit www.pcmlincoln.org or call (402) 475-1303.
