People’s City Mission’s Pastor Tom Spends Time on Streets Advocating for Homeless
For the fourth consecutive year, Pastor Tom of People’s City Mission (PCM, Only251.org) will be going for 24 hours without food or sleep, advocating for the homeless. From 1 p.m. on June 25 to 1 p.m. on June 26, he will be in the Haymarket, on the southwest corner of 8th and P streets. Pastor Tom will be talking with guests throughout the 24 hours, and there will be music, coffee from Starbucks—which is helping to sponsor the event—as well as sidewalk chalk and bubbles. PCM invites the community to stop by and say hi, write a message of encouragement in chalk, and support the homeless.
PCM operates on the belief that when you give a little, you can change a lot. During this event, they are encouraging folks to join Only251.org, a PCM campaign based off of the principle of doing a lot by starting small: You can feed one person one meal once a month at the Mission for only $2.51. That’s less than the price of a cup of coffee—and just one time per month! PCM’s goal is to encourage 20,000 people to join forces through Only251.org, making it possible to feed every person in Lincoln who is experiencing homelessness.
People’s City Mission was started in 1907 by local churches, offering food and shelter for transient and impoverished men, women, and children. In 1987, PCM moved to their current location and now houses 350 men, women, and children nightly in their emergency shelters and the Curtis Center transitional housing program. As Lincoln’s homeless shelter, People’s City Mission’s work is more than 97% funded by community donations. For more information or to donate, visit Only251.org or call (402) 475-1303.
