“Served Like a Girl” Film Highlights Female Veteran Struggles
The Lincoln Community Foundation (my.lcf.org/served), in partnership with NET, Nebraska’s PBS and NPR Stations, is holding a screening of the documentary “Served Like A Girl” at Auld Pavilion in Antelope Park on Monday, May 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The documentary is part of the “Indie Lens Pop-Up” film series and will highlight issues faced by female veterans. Following the 64-minute documentary, a panel of female veterans and representatives from support services will be speaking on the challenges female veterans face.
The film by Lysa Heslov follows a diverse group of American women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan as they compete for the Ms. Veteran America pageant. It takes a look at the often unseen veteran challenges of PTSD, homelessness, broken families, serious illness, physical injuries, and military sexual abuse that are a reality of transitioning from soldier to civilian.
The viewing is part of Lincoln Community Foundation’s Community Connections series designed to educate the community on current issues and topics that impact Lincoln. This Community Connections is made possible by LCF’s Veterans Support Fund.
For those unable to attend the screening, “Served Like A Girl” will air on NET at 9 p.m. Monday, May 28 as part of the “Independent Lens” series on PBS (check local listings).
