Tabitha Receives Walmart Foundation Grant for Meals on Wheels

Tabitha (www.Tabitha.org), your answer for Elder Care, was honored recently to be named the recipient of a generous grant from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program.

The philanthropic initiative is a cornerstone of the company’s foundation, investing in all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. An advisory council in each state reviews and awards funding to 501(c)(3) organizations in amounts ranging from $25,000 to $250,000.

Grant funds to Tabitha will be used to expand Tabitha Meals on Wheels’ capacity to serve Lincoln-area residents, both elderly and disabled. The program currently facilitates the preparation and delivery of more than 550 hot, nutritious, noon meals every day of the year. More than 70% of meal recipients cannot afford the $5.75 cost of a meal, so grant funding and generous donors are relied upon heavily to make up the shortfall. To date, Tabitha Meals on Wheels has reached an all-time high in clients requesting meals—an astonishing 45 percent growth in the past five years.

The Walmart Foundation’s contribution will allow for the purchase and installation of a new walk-in freezer to accommodate Tabitha Meals on Wheels’ constant and increasing demand. It will also accommodate in part a remodel of the program’s distribution center in order to improve traffic flow and efficiency for Meals on Wheels’ many volunteers and staff members.
