In February, TeamMates (LincolnTeammates.org) hosted a Connection Academy with over 50 TeamMates in attendance, including both mentors and mentees. These TeamMates matches gathered at the Don Clifton Professional Learning Center in an out-of-the ordinary time to connect, outside of their normal meetings at schools. A big thanks to local partnering organizations – MakitTakit, Linked 2 Literacy, Great Plains Gaming Project (GPGP), and Husker Athletics – who helped make this event a success.

Jess Vraspir, the TeamMates Organizer of the event was thrilled, “We are so grateful these local community partners donated their time to teach exciting new activities that will liven their meetings together.”

The various activities included: watercolor paintings by Makit Takit; art cards by Linked 2 Literacy; various new games by Great Plains Gaming Project and competitive table sports by Husker student-athletes.

Not only did they engage in fun activities, they also enjoyed delicious food generously donated by Slim Chickens. Vraspir confirmed, “We greatly appreciate their donation; it’s more than just food, it provides a great atmosphere.”

Partnerships with local businesses and organizations are one reason TeamMates can provide the support and structure needed for young people to be matched with great mentors in the program.
