Every November, restaurants offer free meals and businesses provide discounts to veterans. While appreciated, Veterans Day means so much more to David Staenberg (davidstaenbergfamilyfoundation.org).

“In 1977, at just 17 years old, I asked my mother for permission to join the Army. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my father and uncle, who both served as military police officers.

During my three years of service, I learned discipline, respect, responsibility, and the importance of serving something bigger than myself. I also suffered injuries that would affect the rest of my life.

Would I recommend military service to a young person today?

Absolutely. Despite the challenges, those years helped shape who I am.

My experiences also inspired my commitment to helping other veterans. Through the David Staenberg Family Foundation, we support veterans with fi nancial literacy, scholarships, food assistance and programs that help restore dignity and independence.

Veterans Day reminds us that service comes with sacrifi ce, often long after the uniform comes off.”

So this November, thank a veteran. Listen to their story. Offer a simple act of kindness.

“I once helped a stranger who was short on money for coffee. When he asked how to repay me, I simply said, ‘Pass it forward.’

That’s my message this Veterans Day. Gratitude shouldn’t last just one day.

This is David Staenberg, The Free Smile Guy, wishing our veterans a heartfelt thank you and passing along a free smile.”
