YMCA Partners with People’s City Mission to Hold Community Coat Drive

The YMCA of Lincoln (YMCALincoln.org) is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year by partnering with People’s City Mission (PCM) to hold a community coat drive from October 1 – 22.

Lincoln YMCAs will be collecting new and gently used coats for those in need this winter. Each individual that donates a coat will receive a free pass to “Try the Y” for one week, valid through the end of the year. Current YMCA members donating coats will also be entered into a drawing to win a Free Y Membership for 2022. All coats donated during the drive will be distributed to the PCM shelter residents.

“Over the past 150 years, we have stayed true to our purpose of strengthening the community through programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility—making sure our neighbors are supported,” said Barbara Bettin, president and CEO of the Lincoln YMCA.

Through this effort, the organizations are aiming to collect 10 coats a day at each YMCA location, for 22 days, for a total of 880 coats. Along with the YMCA locations, the PCM Help Center and Shelter will be accepting coats.

Two additional coat drives also happening in October will be added to the give-away event. These coat drives will be hosted by Exeter-Milligan FCCLA and Lutheran Schools of Lincoln. After the drive, there will be a kick-off coat distribution at PCM’s Help Center on November 5 at 10 a.m.

People’s City Mission was started in 1907 by local churches, offering food and shelter for transient and impoverished men, women, and children. In 1987, PCM moved to their current location and now houses 350 men, women, and children nightly in their emergency shelters and the Curtis Center transitional housing program.
