YFC Juvenile Justice Ministry Hosts See the Story Luncheon

Nebraska Attorney General, Doug Peterson, recently attended Youth for Christ’s (www.yfclincoln.org) Juvenile Justice Ministry’s (JJM) See the Story luncheon. He joined seven other attendees at the Lancaster County Youth Services Center for this unique opportunity to witness firsthand JJM’s ministry to jailed teens.

Sheli Schindler, the director of the detention center, led the group through the facility. During the tour, Attorney General Peterson and other visitors had the chance to hear the sound of 300lb door securely locking them in, followed by the chance to visit a teen’s cell and see how JJM ministers to kids behind bars.  Peterson saw the 38 teens currently in the facility attending school before their hour of lock-down. He met a kid who is currently being mentored by JJM volunteer.

“It really struck me to hear that 70% of teens in jail don’t have a single outside visitor,” said Attorney General Peterson. Juvenile Justice Ministry is working to change that statistic by providing a chaplain, Eldon Dietrich, who visits the facility daily, coordinating volunteers to offer Bible studies, and mentors to meet with any students while they are in jail and upon their return home. JJM is there for these students in a crucial time of need to provide perspective, hope, and direction for a healthy future.
