On June 21, thousands of individuals across the country participated in the 2011 United Way Day of Action. United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County was one of the 250 United Ways participating in this community effort.
Approximately 58 community volunteers came together to share their love of reading with more than 400 children at CEDARS Youth Services, Family Service Association of Lincoln, Head Start (Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders County) , Northeast Family Center and Boys and Girls Clubs of Lincoln/Lancaster County. Children not only listened to stories, but were able to pick out and take home a book. Companies participating in Day of Action were Lincoln Benefit Life Company, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Windstream Communications, US Bank, Target, and the NoCoast Roller Derby Girls.
The United Way Women’s Leadership Council held a virtual book drive in May raising $3,020. United Way, through an association with First Book, was able to purchase 1,037 books at a reduced rate.
