Amanda Heskett is a professional photographer and owner of Amanda Marie Photography.  She enjoys the creative aspect of photography and simply loves taking pictures, so owning and operating her own business to further her career was a natural progression and something that she takes pride in as much as her craft.

Tell me a little about your business. – I specialize in in taking photos of proposals, engagements, weddings, maternity, newborn, children, families, and seniors. My goal is to make every shoot fun and relaxing.  I find that by being a fun photographer my clients are more relaxed and this makes the photo shoot go more smoothly.

How did you get started in the business? – I started taking photographs at the age of 6 in 4-H as an animal and landscape photographer. When I went to college at UNL, I studied photography. In the more advanced classes we used digital cameras. One of my friends noticed that I had a ‘nice camera’ she asked me to take photos of her and her husband. I had never taken photos of people before so I was nervous. After the photo shoot I noticed that the photos turned out even better than I could have imagined. My friend was so happy with them that I started photographing people.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – My biggest challenge is promoting myself. Lincoln has many photographers and it is hard to grow a business without spending a lot of money on promotion.  Before putting anything in Strictly Business I have only used word of mouth and Facebook to promote.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – With my business still being fairly new, I would have to say doubling my business from my first year to my second year.

Tell us a little about your family. – I grew up on a farm just outside of Auburn, NE. I have an older sister and younger brother. We are 6th generation farmers on my dad’s side. My parents are my biggest role models and have taught me so much through the years.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Spending time out in the country with my boyfriend, friends, or even by myself. From growing up on a farm to now living in the city, it is always nice to go back to my “roots.”  Being out in the country is so relaxing and peaceful. Whether going for a walk, camping, looking at the stars or anything else I just love being out in the country.

What are you the most proud of? – Definitely starting my own photography business.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – Success only comes from never giving up. Take each failure and learn from it.

If you could choose one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Creative or open-minded.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? – Healing people.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – A veterinarian.  It was what I always wanted to be growing up.

What is your favorite movie? – There are too many good ones out there to name just one!

What is your favorite TV show? – Suits

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Grisanti’s

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – George Strait
