Tell us a little about your business. – I work at HazToGo – Lincoln’s Hazardous Waste Center. We help manage Lincoln and Lancaster County hazardous waste to protect health and the environment. We have weekly hours for residents to bring their household hazardous waste. We also have business waste collections four times each year. We bridge the gap between businesses and our licensed hazardous waste contractor by paying the mobilization fee, which helps businesses reduce waste disposal costs. For these business events, I’ll often work with businesses like general contractors, medical offices, non-profits, churches and home occupations to manage waste like aerosols, corrosives, pesticides and flammables.
How did you get started in the business? – I started my career in natural resources with an emphasis on land management. While working for the State, with the National Guard, I had the opportunity to transition to a compliance role with specific emphasis on waste and water. This gave me exposure to hazardous waste regulations, management, shipping and disposal, which eventually led me to my current role with the City as the Hazardous Waste Center Coordinator.
Tell us a little about your family. – My husband and I have been married for almost 15 years. We have two kids – Jacob, 10 and Wren, 7. We also have two dogs (heeler mixes). Our active kids and dogs keep us busy when we’re not at work!
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Looking back, I see that my move from Michigan to Nebraska after high school to attend Concordia University in Seward was a major turning point. The decision had a lot to do with continuing in track & field. I knew almost no one at the outset. I wanted to move home after my first year but was convinced to stick it out. I’m so glad I did and I ended up loving my time there.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I broke the high-jump record during my senior year of high school with a jump of 5’5.” I medaled individually and was part of our team taking 1st place at state.
Who inspires you? – My parents. They are two of the hardest working and selfless people I know.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – Attitude is a decision. You can’t control every circumstance, but you can control how you respond to it.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – Play the piano.
What is your favorite movie? – Lord of the Rings.
What is your favorite TV show? – The Office.
