Tell us a little about your business. – The Back Nine Lincoln South (TheBackNineGolf.com/Lincoln-Ne-South) is Lincoln’s premiere indoor golf and event destination. We have four luxury bays and an inviting space, including a private bay with exclusive access for members and their guests, all featuring top-of-the-line Full Swing simulators. Private and corporate members enjoy 24/7 access. Tee times are also available to the public. Our space is available for small group events or up to 50 people, reserving the entire facility. Our PGA Professional, Matt Person, offers personalized instruction and group clinics, using advanced analytics and instant feedback to help improve your game, whether you’re looking to fine tune or you’re brand new to the game.
How did you get started in the business? – I have a lifelong love for both Husker football and golf. To me, those have two main things in common: They both provide a sense of community, whether it’s the 85,000 friends at Memorial Stadium, the new friends you were paired with on the course or the golf league group you enjoy every summer. I’ve found myself at the end of the season trying to fill the void, waiting for the next golf or football season to start. It’s a long, cold winter without two of my passions. I wanted to bring that sense of community to Lincoln year round. The Back Nine is the perfect fit. I provide a place for people to enjoy golf and community, 24/7/365. No more waiting for spring for golf.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Bringing the Back Nine Indoor golf to the Lincoln community. This is realization of a lifelong dream to bring our community together at a destination for golf and celebration.
Tell us a little about your family. – My nurse wife of 26 years, Charlotte, is the glue that holds our family together. Our amazing and talented twins, Hayden and Graham are seniors at Lincoln East. Both are deciding where they will continue their education journey. My parents are still in Nebraska (Rest in peace, Mom), and I have three brothers and a sister in different parts of the country. We’re all close.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Meeting my wife changed my life. I’d be lost without her. Other than that, surviving Thyroid Cancer… twice. 10 years ago, when I was first diagnosed, I soul searched and realized that I was not in a career that brought true meaning to my life. Earlier this year, when the cancer came back, it was like a lightbulb reminding me it was time for a reset. Without the cancer, I may never have opened the Back Nine Lincoln.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Golf (YEP!). Husker Football. Movies and Cooking. Spending time with loved ones.
Who inspires you? – Marjorie Armstrong, my grandmother, was the strongest person I’ve ever known.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? – Time Travel. I’d like to spend one more day with my Mom and my Grandma Marge.
Which talent would you most like to have? – The ability to hit the long ball like Happy Gilmore.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with? – Heartland Cancer Foundation.
What is your favorite movie? – Top Gun.
What is your favorite TV show? – Mayor of Kingstown or The Big Bang Theory.
What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? – Carmela’s Bistro.
