Tell us a little about your business. – For 40 years, Schwisow Construction (schwisow.com) has served as a trusted General Contractor specializing in the design and construction of commercial, manufacturing, office, healthcare, sports & recreation and industrial facilities. While we are proudly based in Lincoln, Nebraska, our team has successfully completed projects across the state, partnering with organizations that help strengthen and grow our communities.
How did you get started in the business? – I began my career as a licensed architect designing commercial and multifamily projects before moving to the owner & real estate development side of the industry to gain experience in all phases of development, from site acquisition and financing through construction and project stabilization. This background allows me to bring a well-rounded perspective, combining architectural, development and construction expertise to collaborate with partners and stakeholders to deliver successful projects.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – I was the design architect on a six-story mixed-use development featuring 99 residential apartments and 6,000 SF of retail. Once construction began, I transitioned to the development team that was delivering the project, which allowed me to see it through from a more holistic perspective. I helped secure final building approvals and support the project through opening and occupancy. It has been especially rewarding to see the building come to life and experience it as part of the community, knowing the role I played in shaping its design, construction and operation.
Tell us a little about your family. – Both my husband and I were born and raised in Lincoln. We moved out of state after graduating from UNL and recently moved back home to raise our daughter near her grandparents and cousins.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – I’m currently experiencing one of the most significant transitions in my life. In the past 18 months, I’ve become a mother, moved across the country, bought our first home and started my new job. It is a season of tremendous change, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Anything that gets me outdoors. I enjoy camping, hiking, swimming and playing sports, but can also appreciate slowing down and relaxing with a beautiful sunset in the backyard.
Who inspires you? – I’m inspired by people who are passionate about what they do. Their enthusiasm is contagious and it motivates me to learn more, support their efforts and bring the same level of energy and commitment to my own interests.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Authentic. I strive to be genuine in my relationships and work, and I hope that’s what people remember most.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? – Time travel. I love exploring new places and experiencing different cultures, so the ability to also visit different time periods would be incredible.
What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? – My first job in high school was at Valentino’s and I still love their hamburger pizza.
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Walt Disney. It would be fascinating to learn about his vision, placemaking and ability to blend storytelling and design into a physical manifestation of imagination.
