How did you get started in the business? – I originally wanted to be an airline pilot, but at that time, airlines were laying off employees and merging on a regular basis. Shortly after finishing college, I got an opportunity to work at an airport and absolutely loved it. After 18 years at my last airport, I’ve recently moved to Lincoln, and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – I would have to say operating an airport during pandemic times. Airports are a business and rely on revenue to operate. When people stop utilizing the airport or opening new businesses on airport property, money isn’t coming in. It was challenging when all our plans, budgets, etc. were no longer going the way we had hoped.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Becoming an Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) through the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE). This process took a lot of hard work, but it was a goal of mine I set for myself early in my airport career.
Tell us a little about your family. – I have been married to my wife Christy for 26 years. We have two sons (21, 18) and one daughter (14).
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – This is a recent one. A few months ago, I traveled to Nebraska for the first time in my life to interview for a position at LNK (LincolnAirport.com). A few months later, Nebraska is my home.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I enjoy being outdoors or watching sports. Currently, I have been spending time learning my way around the area and going to new places.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I have never lost my interest or desire to play video games. I guess you can say that my Xbox is my escape from life sometimes.
Who inspires you? – My wife, Christy. She has been my #1 fan and supporter every step of my career. She has been my voice of reason, encouragement and confidence.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – A mentor once told me “Michael, there isn’t an original idea out there. Use your resources.” In the airport business, this is true most of the time. There is usually someone out there who has experienced the latest challenge I’m facing. I am thankful to work in an industry where colleagues at other airports are more than happy to help each other out.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? – I work at an airport….Flying of course!
Which talent would you most like to have? – I wish I could play multiple musical instruments. I envy those who can learn quickly or just play by ear.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – I am an audiobook person and the list is long. If I had to choose a favorite, I would choose a book series: The Terminal List by Jack Carr.
What is your favorite movie? – A movie from my childhood remains at the top of the list. The Goonies. I went to the theater this year when it played for the 40th anniversary.
What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? – Can’t beat a good burger at Honest Abe’s.
