Tell us a little about your business.

SP Group was founded by Dave Swan and Darin Petersen over 16 years ago. The firm continues to expand each year as we work side by side with existing and prosperous clients.

How did you get started in the business?

My journey in accounting started during high school helping my mom with bookkeeping for our family business. That led to majoring in accounting at Nebraska Wesleyan University. After graduation, I sat for the CPA exams and passed. I started my career with a firm in Kansas where I learned the basic building blocks of public accounting, gaining experience in both the tax realm and audit world. After a few years, I decided to move back home to be closer to family. After a phone call with my now coworker Austin Zimmerman, my interest in SP Group was piqued, and I knew I wanted to be a part of this fun, dynamic team.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

Passing all the CPA exams and becoming a certified public accountant.

Tell us a little about your family.

My nephew Oliver is one of the best sources of joy in my life. Being an aunt is my favorite title. I also can’t forget to mention the other awesome members of my family: my parents Wayne and Carla, my sister Kayla, and brother-in-law Jesse.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

Moving away from Nebraska after college. I learned a lot about myself and my values. Returning home was another big turning point. It’s been rewarding establishing my career at SP Group, and I’m enjoying being surrounded by old friends and loved ones.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?

Whenever I have the day off, I love to travel. If it’s just one day, I like to explore Lincoln and the surrounding areas by testing out new restaurants or discovering new local activities. When I have multiple days off, I love to hop in a car or on a plane to explore different cities or countries. If you need help planning a trip to a foreign country in less than six weeks, I’ve got you covered. This summer I planned a last-minute two-week vacation to Greece and Amsterdam. The travel bug is real!

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?

I think the best way to relieve stress is to punch it out. I’ve been a member of a kickboxing gym for a year now and really enjoy a session on the heavy bag throwing hooks or round kicks!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress, simultaneously”

Sophia Bush

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be?

I love to bake and briefly considered becoming a pastry chef.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

The Hub Café – best brunch in town! I recommend a macchiato and the farm egg sandwich.
