Meet Tommy Winn, a partner/owner at Tomahawks Axe Throwing.

Tell us a little about your business. – Tomahawks Axe Throwing is an entertainment venue providing something “different” for people to do. We are located at 815 O St. in the Lincoln Haymarket.

How did you get started in the business? – The partners and I were looking for something fun/different to bring to the Haymarket District for people to do before/after dinner/concerts/football games/etc.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Getting permission to actually open our business to the public. Obtaining city approval was tough because it was such a new idea! We were still learning what we could/couldn’t do and brainstorming how to build out the facility before we were able to roll the idea out. When axe throwing was first brought up, the idea was not fully welcomed. The thought of throwing axes for fun sounds crazy, but once you do it, you understand what all the hype is about. Plus, it is a lot safer than it sounds. We are proud to announce that we still have had ZERO injuries.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Tomahawks in general has been fortunate enough to gain traction with people. We have participants that continuously support us and continue to help the sport grow. We have been lucky to survive the pandemic thus far and have been able to keep our doors open for entertainment along with being able to keep our staff employed. This has also allowed us to give back to the community. We have supported multiple fundraisers and will continue to do so in order to help out our community.

Tell us a little about your family. – I have a family I can count on. I’ve never had a situation where I couldn’t turn to my older brother, my younger sister, or my parents for help.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Thirteen years ago, I started working with Murray Roofing. We started this small roofing company out of an apartment. I am now the vice president/CEO of the company and we have over 15 full-time employees. The company has grown to offer high-end custom home building and restoration services.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Play sand volleyball. I also really enjoy fishing, boating, watching sports, or just having a lazy day on the couch in front of the TV.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I was bit by a shark in Mexico in 2019. I have a wicked scar to show from it—and it was caught on video!

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Awesome.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? – The ability to read other people’s minds.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – Habitat for Humanity, The Bridge Behavioral Health, and The People’s City Mission.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – The last good book I read was Verity by Colleen Hoover.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Narrowing it down to one person is very tough. Here are a couple I would love to have dinner with: Warren Buffet, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, or Rob Gronkowski.
