National Association of Women in Construction to Host Block Kids Event
The Greater Omaha Chapter #116 of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC; www.nawicomaha.com) will hold its annual Block Kids event on January 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Metropolitan Community College, South Campus, 2909 Edward Babe Gomez Ave. in the Industrial Training Center Building (ITC) Conference Center 120.
The award-winning program, provided by NEF – NAWIC Education Foundation, is held by NAWIC chapters across the country to introduce children to the construction industry in an effort to create awareness and promote curiosity about careers in the construction industry. This free event is limited to 100 children in grades K-6. Each child is provided with 100 interlocking blocks, a small rock, string, foil, and a poster board. They are then given a maximum of one hour to use these materials and their imaginations to design and build a project that is in some way related to the construction industry.
Once the projects are completed, judges will interview participants and ask questions such as Why did you choose to build this project? What do you like about it? Is there anything you would change? and How will it be used? Projects are scored on oral presentation, use of materials, enthusiasm, attention to detail, creativity, and reason for participation. Winning local projects will advance to a regional competition with the chance to advance to nationals.
The National Association of Women in Construction is an international organization of women working in and around the construction industry.
