SCC Responds to COVID-19 by Donating Masks, Delivering Meals, Training Teachers

Due to the recent lifestyle changes the COVID-19 pandemic requires, Southeast Community College (SCC) (southeast.edu) has implemented a variety of programs in order to support their students, staff, and community.

A number of volunteer seamstresses at SCC are playing their part during the outbreak by sewing and donating cloth face masks to high risk facilities. Close to a dozen members of the SCC community have created more than 100 masks and hats with plans to continue the effort. Masks primarily go towards long-term care facilities, critical access hospitals, and first responders.

SCC’s culinary/hospitality program’s professors and students have taken it upon themselves to prepare meals for high risk community members. Each week, they provide four meals to about 100 people. Meals such as lasagna, chili, beef stroganoff, and stir fry are easily microwavable and appeal to large audiences. They conduct daily health screens for everyone involved to ensure the safety of the food.

While SCC has been giving to the community, they’ve also made a commitment to their students and teachers as well. In order to provide the highest quality education, they assembled an Incident Response Team in order to create a smooth transition to online schoolwork. They provided laptops to nearly 1,000 professors along with ZOOM training.
