American Heart Association Shares Tips for Healthy Eating on a Budget

Many of us want to eat healthy, but it can be difficult when we are also trying to save money. Thankfully, the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) has tips for healthy eating when on a budget. Start by thinking about what kinds of foods you like, and then envision the healthiest version of them. For example, if you love French fries, try a baked potato seasoned with herbs, or if macaroni and cheese is your go-to meal, boil pasta and sprinkle it with olive oil, fresh herbs and spices, and just a little cheese. They also suggest taking the time to learn how to cook; if you are always buying food that is at least partially prepared for you, you’re likely going to spend a lot more money on food than necessary.

Plan your meals out before you shop, as it can save time in the kitchen and money at the store. If a whole week is too intimidating, start with just workdays, or just one meal a day. This also ensures that you hit all the healthy food groups you need each day. Another great trick is doubling the size of a meal you make and freezing half, knocking out two meals in the time it takes to make one. This lets you take advantage of grocery sales and eliminates the excuse to grab something unhealthy in a rush.
