The Nebraska Safety Council (NESC, nesafetycouncil.org) has expanded their teen driver education program to offer inperson, online and online via Google Classroom courses. Several students now participate in hybrid courses. The flexibility of options allows students to participate and learn in an environment that works best for them.
“Our goal is to provide a strong foundation for teens by providing education and resources to make them safe drivers. Our course emphasizes the importance of distracted-free driving, how to be a defensive driver and why it is crucial to pay attention to signs to avoid speeding and other hazards,” explained NESC Traffic Services Manager Tracy Burmeister. “Parents play a very important role in providing additional behind the wheel drive time. We look forward to partnering with families in the community to help make Nebraska roads safe!”
Each course provides 20 hours of in-person classroom or online training, five hours of hands-on driving, five hours of observation and a 30-minute behind the wheel drive test. When behind the wheel, they will cover highway/gravel, parallel/perpendicular/angle parking, marked and unmarked streets/intersections, interstate driving, heavy and city-traffic driving.
The newest offering is a one week class via Google Classroom. This is a hybrid class that allows students the flexibility to work at their own pace with instructor support, have access to an easy-to-use app compatible with mobile devices and virtual office hours for extra one-on-one support with the instructor.
Registration for summer classes is open! Lincoln courses are offered June 12-15, June 19-22, June 26-29, July 17-20 and 24-27. Interested families can register for a teen driver education course on nesafetycouncil.org.
