Fresh Start (freshstarthome.org), a transitional shelter dedicated to empowering women experiencing homelessness, has made history by becoming the first organization in the state of Nebraska to receive accreditation from the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR). This groundbreaking achievement marks a major milestone not only for Fresh Start, but for the entire state.

NARR accreditation is a nationally recognized standard of excellence in recovery housing. It demonstrates that a program offers safe, supportive environments grounded in evidence-based practices and guided by the core principles of peer support, resident empowerment and long-term recovery success.

For over 30 years, Fresh Start has remained committed to walking alongside women as they rebuild their lives. “This accreditation validates the work we’ve been doing for decades, meeting women where they are, providing structure and support, and believing in their capacity for change,” said Monica Zinke, executive director of Fresh Start.

To earn the accreditation, Fresh Start underwent a rigorous evaluation process, assessing its policies, programming, facility operations and outcomes. The review emphasized the organization’s dedication to resident safety, rights, community involvement and individualized recovery pathways. While recovery from substance abuse is the most common, the term “recovery” is applied to other categories, such as mental health.

For residents, the recognition is deeply meaningful. “Fresh Start gave me a second chance and a place to grow,” said one resident. “Knowing that it meets national standards makes me even more proud to be part of this community.”
