Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach Sees Increased Need in Summer Months

Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (mtko.org) is experiencing an increase in the number of guests coming in for meals and outreach services such as showers and laundry. Due to a combination of factors, summer is typically Matt Talbot’s busiest time of the year. Families are stretched thinner, facing increased costs of child care with school out of session. People who have been staying with friends and family may be asked to move on now that the winter months have passed, leading them to camp outside or sleep in their cars. Landlords reluctant to evict during the cold winter months may be more inclined to take action now that warmer weather has arrived.

Prepared, nutritious daily meals are offered free of charge. Meals can be eaten in the dining room on trays or provided in “to-go” containers and taken off site. In addition, guests can access other outreach services such as substance use evaluations and other basic and emergency needs.

“For those in our community without a home and regular access to water, summer is really tough,” said Susanne Blue, Executive Director. “Matt Talbot is here to provide a cool shelter during the day as well as meals, water, and other outreach services to help keep people safe, healthy, and hopeful for better days.”

During this busy season, donations of sunscreen, bug spray, water, cooling towels, and bike locks are needed. Donations can be brought directly to the community kitchen and outreach center at 2121 N 27th St. during business hours Monday through Friday.
