Starting this year, with the May primaries, all Nebraska residents will need to bring a photo ID with them to the polls. Disability Rights Nebraska (www.disabilityrightsnebraska.org) has just launched a new three minute Voter ID explainer video to help you through the process. The video provides tips on how to prepare so you can cast your vote with ease.
The good news is that a lot of different types of ID will be accepted. For people who are unable to afford the fee for a state ID card, the legislature has made state ID cards free, through your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), for voting purposes to make sure people can still exercise their right to vote.
If you don’t already have a Nebraska photo ID, when you go to the DMV, you will need to bring: your social security number, a copy of your birth certificate, and two documents that show your name and address (such as pieces of mail you’ve received at your current address).
Nebraska birth certificates can also be attained for free through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ Vital Records division.
