TeamMates Celebrates Graduating Seniors
Last month, 85 Lincoln TeamMates (TeamMates.org) seniors completed their high school careers and will graduate remotely this summer. Many of these students received scholarships from TeamMates partners and donors to help them pursue post-secondary education beginning in the fall. Typically, TeamMates hosts a graduation celebration to honor the seniors who have participated as mentees, to award students with scholarships, and to give community partners and donors the opportunity to meet the recipients of the scholarships they fund.
“We’re sad they weren’t able to have the typical graduation experience, as well as receive recognition at our annual Spring Celebration,” says Jim Bennett, coordinator of Lincoln TeamMates. “However, we are excited for their bright futures.”
The students are excited, too. Some of them have participated as mentees since they were in third grade. One scholarship recipient noted: “I know that I’ve gotten a lot of experiences from the TeamMates program. I think those experiences will help me get to where I want to be in life.”
Lincoln TeamMates engages with local businesses and private donors to invite their partnership both as scholarship providers and as mentors. According to Bennett, when young people see that community members believe in them, it supports their self-confidence and urges them forward.
