Robert Darrah, director of dining operations at Legacy Retirement Communities (legacyretirement.com), has received the 2025 Association for Healthcare Foodservice (AHF) Lifetime Achievement Award, the organization’s highest honor. The award was presented on August 23 at the AHF National Conference in New Orleans.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes professionals whose leadership, innovation and vision— combined with a deep commitment to their local communities—have left a lasting impact on healthcare foodservice nationwide.
With a 43-year career, including 26 years at Legacy Retirement, Darrah oversees dining across four Lincoln Nebraska communities, directing more than 78,000 meals monthly. He has transformed Legacy’s dining program from traditional banquet-style service into a five-star, restaurant-quality experience. His initiatives include hiring classically trained chefs, introducing scratch cooking and international cuisines, expanding dining venues and implementing advanced technology—efforts that have driven customer satisfaction to 97% and reshaped the standard for retirement dining.
An AHF member since 2009, Darrah served as national president (2023–2024) and chaired multiple leadership committees. His community involvement has included Meals on Wheels, TeamMates mentoring, youth sports coaching, donating countless hours to Palmyra High School Athletics and fundraising for the Nebraska Wesleyan Football Boosters.
Darrah’s achievements have also earned him the AHF Partnership in Leadership Award, the NAFEM Doctorate of Foodservice Award, recognition twice as Food Service Director magazine’s “FSD of the Month” and a seat on the International Food Manufacturers Presidents Council.
