The holidays often bring families together, and sometimes they reveal changes we may not notice through phone calls or occasional visits. You may walk into Mom or Dad’s home and notice the refrigerator is nearly empty, medications have been missed, laundry is piling up, or the house does not look the way it normally does. Maybe your loved one seems more forgetful, has lost weight, is having difficulty getting around, or has become more isolated.
Individually, these changes may seem small. Together, they can be signs that everyday life is becoming more difficult.
At Visiting Angels, we encourage families to look beyond whether a loved one can simply “manage” at home and ask a different question: Are they still living safely, comfortably, and with the quality of life they deserve?
Sometimes the person who needs support is not the older adult, but their spouse or family caregiver. Exhaustion, stress, and constantly worrying about leaving a loved one alone can also signal that it may be time for additional help.
Recognizing these changes does not mean someone immediately needs full-time care. In-home care can begin with a few hours of assistance with meals, bathing, housekeeping, transportation, companionship, or other everyday needs. The goal is to fill in the gaps while allowing the older adult to continue doing as much as possible independently.
“Our goal is never to take away someone’s independence. We want to provide the right amount of support so they can continue living safely and confidently in the place they call home.” – Natalie Leon, Owner of Visiting Angels
At Visiting Angels, care begins by getting to know the individual. We consider their needs, routines, personality, preferences, and what is most important to them before thoughtfully matching them with a caregiver. As needs change, we stay involved and adjust care along the way.
The holidays can be a wonderful opportunity to notice, listen, and start conversations. You do not have to wait for a crisis to ask for help. Sometimes a little support today is exactly what helps someone remain independent tomorrow.
Not sure if it’s time? Start with a conversation.
