Adair Sue Smith was at a crossroads in her life when her sister gave her The Secret on tape to listen to. When she woke up the next morning, she had an idea to open a re-sale store where she could raise money for animals, which have always been a big part of her life. This lead her to opening Cause for Paws, a 501 c 3 non profit re-sale store that carries women’s and juniors clothing, shoes, purses, jewelry, household items, decor and pet products. All items from their store are donated and workers are volunteers. At the end of the month after all of their bills are paid their proceeds support local and Nebraska animal charities such as Hearts United, Capitol Humane Society, The Cat House, Dogs Deserve Better, Golden Retriever Rescue, Big Dog-Huge Paws, The Lincoln Animal Ambassadors and the Nebraska Wildlife Rescue to name a few. They offer coffee, tea, personal service and personal shopping to all of their customers and a pet friendly environment for our shoppers and their furry friends.
Tell us a little about your family.
My family is the best…I have a husband, Darren, and a daughter Chaz (short for Chasity) who are very supportive in all that I do. My father and his wife, two brothers, a sister and their families live in Lincoln and a sister and her husband in Omaha. We are all very close and all love animals…they too have been very supportive of me and the store.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
Knowing that with all of my heart that it is better to give than to receive and realizing a dream of mine has come true.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Ride my bike and play with my dogs in the park.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
I love to belly dance.
What are you the most proud of?
Donating over $100,000 to local and NE animal charities so far.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
To listen to and understand those around me.
What is the one goal you would most like to accomplish?
To inspire other people to open shops like ours in their communities to help raise money for animal charities.
How would your friends describe you?
Kind to a fault…happy go lucky…exotic looking.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life?
Dancing.
Which talent would you most like to have?
I wish I could sing better.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My age…I recently turned 62…if I were younger I would have more time to raise money for animals.

Misty’s (and not only because my sister Lavon and her husband Rees are owners). I love the food there.
