How did you get started in the business?
I began my career while I was still in high school in York, NE. The radio station, KAWL, gave me a shot as the janitor, and I worked my way up. Forty-three years later I’m still in radio, and…still cleaning up.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
The biggest challenge for all broadcast professionals has been keeping up with technology. When I got my start, we were playing 45 records. Today, everything is digital.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
Staying true to my calling as a broadcaster. There have been times when I’ve been frustrated and thought I should get out of the business. I’m glad I’ve resisted the temptation to leave. I believe God called me to broadcasting, and I am blessed to be involved in Christian media.
Tell us a little about your family.
I’m married to Carol who is an incredible lady. We have five great kids and four incredible grand kids.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
When I accepted Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior. That might seem strange to some, but it’s true. My life completely changed for the better. I would invite everyone to check it out.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I love serving others. Taking care of family is deeply rewarding. I also like going to movies and traveling with my wife.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
I used to love acting and singing. You may have seen me years ago at Pinewood Bowl in Camelot. I’ve also sung radio jingles and sung the national anthem at ball games. That was a long time ago, though.
Who inspires you?
Jesus is my inspiration. He led such a beautiful life and shared wisdom that transcends the ages.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Do unto others.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be?
Faithful.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be?
Ministry. I believe that is going to happen.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?
The Bible, for sure. It is as relevant today as it was when it was first written. It’s also the #1 best seller of all time.
What is your favorite movie?
The Passion of Christ.
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be?
By now you probably know who I’m going to say…Jesus!
