Tell us a little about your business.
Star City Dental is a general dentist practice that sees patients of all ages from 2 to 102. We keep it simple for our clients with online booking as well as same day crowns. We pride ourselves in our treatment and care of all of our patients.
How did you get started in the business?
I am a fourth-generation dentist and originally had planned on going to medical school, but as I spent more time over the summers in my dad’s practice, I quickly realized this is what I wanted to do for my career.
Tell us a little about your family.
My husband, Dr. Daniel Tylka, is an oral surgeon in town. We have two sons, Cole (4) and Owen (1), and a dog named Millie that keeps us very busy. We enjoy spending summers on the lake and time with our friends and family.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
My husband and I lived in Louisville, KY, for many years as he was doing his residency. We absolutely loved that area of the country, but as we spent more time there we just always had this feeling that we weren’t home and finally we decided to move back to Lincoln. We desperately wanted to get back to “The Good Life.”
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I like to golf when I get the time. True days off are rare, but I do enjoy golfing with my husband or friends. If I’m with my kids, we enjoy the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, going for trail rides, or anything outdoors.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
I played soccer in college for the Huskers and, after my four years were up, I spent a semester abroad in Australia and New Zealand before starting dental school. I graduated dental school from UNMC exactly 100 years after my great grandfather graduated from Nebraska Dental School.
Who inspires you?
Professionally, my staff and patients inspire me. My staff inspires me to be a good leader and guide the team in a direction that will make us successful, and my patients inspire me to be the best dentist I can be in order to give them the best treatment. Personally, my husband and kids inspire me to be a great mom/wife and somehow balance the craziness of life on a daily basis.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“A smile is a curved line that straightens everything out.”
If you had a theme song, what would it be?
“Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be?
I’d like to run a bakery.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why?
Every fall, our office sponsors a coat drive and donates the items to A Warmer Day. We also try to donate our time to the Lincoln Food Bank or other local organizations during the holiday season.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?
Wildflower Hill by Kim Wilkins.
What is your favorite movie?
Grease.
