Tell us a little about your businesses.
In addition to building custom homes we have a division that specializes in roofing installation and repair and a division that specializes in restoration services, including water damage, smoke and fire damage, mold remediation, disaster recovery and remodeling projects. Both of those divisions serve residential and commercial clients. Our custom home division is widely recognized for innovative home design trends, unique architectural features, and superior customer service. We are experts in bringing dreams to life. Our in-house home design capabilities allow our clients to make changes and see them instantly. It’s truly amazing! You can visualize changes then and there without waiting weeks for CAD updates. With our collective offerings, we always say “one call does it all!”
How did you get started in the business?
My father has been in the construction industry since 1976 in Kansas, so I grew up around it. After graduating from UNL as a student-athlete, I immediately followed in his footsteps and started up our first company in the family business, Murray Roofing. Year after year, our involvement in the construction industry continues to expand, so we’ve since established Murray Custom Homes and Murray Restoration.
Tell us a little about your family.
My wonderful parents, Jim and Bernice, have been married for 40 years. They are a perfect example of what makes a marriage and family business work! My brother Scott and I have a close relationship. He moved to Lincoln about 10 years ago and works as a senior network engineer (aka computer nerd!). My sister, Melissa, recently moved to Hawaii for a new job position. The real excitement in the family comes from my 4-year-old son, Breckson, who has endless energy, going through each day at a constant 100mph. He is a true delight!
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I love to catch a Husker sporting event of any kind! In the summer, I can be found outside soaking up the sun or partaking in sand volleyball, fishing, etc.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
Immediately after college, I tried out for a movie in Chicago and made the main cast. I moved there for 4 months to shoot it. It was an amazing experience and I learned a lot about myself during the process, as I had zero acting experience prior to that.
What are you the most proud of?
My upbringing, which paved the way for me to become an academic All-American for the Husker wrestling team. It gives me great pride to see the same values and morals radiating from my son that were instilled in me. I also cherish the close relationships I have developed with my family, friends, and co-workers.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be?
Driven!
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life?
Athleticism. God blessed my entire family with a tremendous amount of athletic ability. Unfortunately, I chose wrestling as my main sport, which didn’t offer much opportunity post-college. Therefore, I had the hang up the wrestling shoes for the business life. I miss the sport dearly and still remain involved with the University’s wrestling program.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey!
