LHRMA’s October Program to Focus on Assistance Animals in the Workplace

The Lincoln Human Resource Management Association (LHRMA; lincolnhr.org) is excited to present their October meeting on Tuesday, October 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Southeast Community College Jack J. Huck Continuing Education Center, 301 S. 68th St. Pl. This month’s topic will be on service animals and emotional support animals in the workplace. The presentation will be led by Marna Munn. This program is valid for 1 PDCs toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recertification.

Marna Munn, attorney and executive director of the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission, will discuss what process the employer must follow when contemplating an animal in the workplace and what guidance the employer can follow if an employee is allowed to bring the animal to work. This presentation will largely focus on the requirements of Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Title I protects the employment rights of individuals with disabilities in the workplace. However, they will also discuss Titles II and III of the ADA, as well as several other laws, to understand how treatment of assistance animals under those laws can create questions and confusion with regard to assistance animals in the workplace.

The lunch and program registration fee is $15 for LHRMA members and $25 for all other attendees. Luncheon attendance is free for SHRM designated student chapter members. Students must register through Jenessa Keiser, college relations chair, at college.relations@lincolnhr.org for free meeting attendance. General registration can be found online at lincolnhr.org/event/october-program-2019.
