Lincoln’s First Spanish Immersion Program for Preschoolers Opens

Aventuras (aventurasne.com) – Spanish Immersion Program for Young Children was established by Luis and Angela Gonzalez, parents to three young children whom they are raising bi-lingually. While they have made a conscious effort to speak both English and Spanish in their home, they have found that their children are largely exposed to English on a daily basis and the parents wanted to do more to expose their children to Spanish. Upon looking for classes for their children, they found that the type of learning environment they were looking for, just didn’t exist in Lincoln and so they set out to create it.

Luis and Angela believe that the immersive element of the program is key to the successful language acquisition of the students. The amount of time a child is exposed to a language directly correlates to the level of language proficiency they gain. Aventuras welcomes children with any level of Spanish proficiency and there is no expectation that parents speak Spanish at home. One of the best ways for a young child to learn a language is to hear others speaking it fluently and to be able to gain context from face to face communication through social interaction.

At Aventuras, children play games, eat snack, make arts and crafts and do science experiments all taught in Spanish. They learn the language without thinking about it. The curriculum mirrors that of a typical English language preschool, taught in Spanish. The social skills, daily life skills, science and math concepts taught are universal.
