As the college football regular season has concluded, many college football teams will continue their season in postseason bowls or the national championship playoffs. These games are extremely popular for placing bets. Nebraska Council on Problem Gambling’s (necpg.org) Executive Director urges people to practice responsible gambling behavior, and wants all Nebraskans to know that free and confidential problem gambling treatment is available.

“As the holiday season gets into full swing, so do the opportunities to place a variety of sports bets. It is of high importance to ensure all Nebraskans are aware of the consequences of problem gambling, resources for problem gambling treatment, and education on how to gamble responsibly,” states Mike Sciandra, NeCPG Executive Director.

Safe gambling begins with setting clear limits on time, frequency, and money spent. Individuals should only use disposable income, avoid borrowing or relying on credit cards or loans, and never pawn or sell items. Understand the odds of each game and treat gambling strictly as entertainment. Developing accountability, such as telling someone when and where you plan to gamble, can also help maintain control. It is important to avoid gambling when emotionally vulnerable or under the influence of alcohol.
