Offutt Airforce Base to Spend $32M to Temporarily Move Operations to LNK Airport

Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue is temporary relocating its operations to the Lincoln Airport (LNK, lincolnairport.com) while their runway undergoes complete reconstruction. Offutt is spending an estimated $32 million to construct the improvements necessary to allow the nearly 750 airmen and women from the 55th Wing to operate out of the Lincoln Airport during their temporary stay. The Air Force recently awarded a California company a $144-million contract to do a total reconstruction of their 79-year-old runway, a project that is expected to begin this winter and take about two years to complete.

Offutt Air Force Base is one of the state’s largest employers and LNK is pleased to help give them a temporary home. Being able to relocate Offutt to Lincoln is “huge” because of the short drive from Bellevue, which means personnel will be able to return home each night. What’s more, it will save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars because operations won’t have to be relocated to another base in a different state.
The Lincoln Airport Authority operates the Lincoln Airport, a public/military airport located five miles northwest of Lincoln. It is the second-largest airport in Nebraska, spanning more than 5,000 acres. They currently have commercial air service through United Airlines and operate the LNK Enterprise Park, one of the largest industrial parks in the Midwest.
