The Nebraska Repertory Theatre Presents “Spirit of 68” for 50th Anniversary

The Nebraska Repertory Theatre (nebraskarep.org) celebrates its 50th Anniversary year with a special presentation, Spirit of 68. This one-night-only event is Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres beginning at 6:30 p.m. The show will feature a tribute to 50 years of theatre with live music, large-scale puppetry, and stilt dancing. This special celebration takes place at the Temple Building, located off of 12th and R St. on the edge of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus. Tickets are $19.68, available at the Lied Center Ticket Office (301 N. 12th St.).

In 1968, Dallas S. Williams, in concert with the rest of the Theatre Arts faculty at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, decided to take the first step toward establishing a resident professional theatre in Lincoln by founding the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. This trend of producing plays “a cut above” the university’s academic season continued until 1988, when Executive Director Tice L. Miller and Artistic Director Robert Hall envisioned the development of a fully professional theatre. They subsequently forged a relationship with Actors’ Equity Association, the professional actors’ union.

Over the years, the Nebraska Rep has developed and taken the theater in bold, new directions that expand the theatre’s reach and serve the community in exciting new ways. After a national search, current Artistic Director, Andy Park, was hired, beginning his tenure in January 2017. In September 2017, the Nebraska Rep relaunched as a year-round regional professional Equity theatre company.
