Malone Community Center Holds Celebration of Black History in February

The Malone Community Center (www.malonecenter.org) recently held a celebration of black history, in which they showcased local black artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders as well as black history exhibits and interactive media. The event honored the life and contributions of Malone Community Center Founder Millard T. Woods and his family in Lincoln.

The Malone Community Center also presented the first Millard T. Woods Community Service Award to Kwabena A. Mensah, owner of Oasis Barbershop and founder of Visionary Youth; Nature Medicine Song Villegas, an intersectional activist for Stand in for Nebraska and volunteer at the Malone Center; and Stephanie Woods, the granddaughter of Millard T. Woods and volunteer at the Malone Center.

The main exhibit at the event was created by Millard T. Woods’ grandson Devon Woods, and poems and speeches by black activists were also featured. They were read aloud to attendees by children who attend the Malone Center’s after school program.

The Malone Community Center started in 1955 as a community center in the midst of the civil rights era as a platform for creating racial and socioeconomic equality. For more information, visit www.malonecenter.org or contact them directly at (402) 474-1110.
