Lincoln Rotary #14 Volunteers at Community Action’s Gathering Place

In an effort to meet continued needs during the COVID-19 crisis, Community Action’s Gathering Place (www.communityactionatwork.org) has not only adapted its services, but expanded them. On April 4, the Gathering Place expanded service days, previously Monday through Friday, to include weekends. Lincoln Rotary #14 volunteered to support this effort and packaged meals the first weekend of increased service.

Free hot, nutritious meals from the Gathering Place are packaged in to-go boxes, available for pick-up seven days a week between 5 to 6 p.m., on the Gathering Place front porch at 1448 E St. Expanding to include weekend service was identified as an immediate priority in light of circumstances related to COVID-19.

The decision to begin weekend service at the Gathering Place was made earlier this year. It came in light of previously observed community need, including a guest survey, and a recommendation by the Gathering Place Advisory Committee. Implementation was initially planned for late May, thanks to the support of Lincoln Community Foundation and Union Bank & Trust. As circumstances evolved within the community, however, the agency decided to move its start date forward. The addition of weekend meal service at the Gathering Place is permanent and will continue even after social distancing guidelines are lifted.
