Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center Marks 120th Year of the Christmas Bird Count

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a community science program that provides data for the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center (audubon.org) and other organizations to assess the health of bird populations and guide conservation action. In its 120th year, the CBCs for Lincoln and Omaha have been scheduled for Saturday, December 28.

The CBC is crucial for birds’ survival. Audubon’s recent climate report, Survival by Degrees, shows that two-thirds of North American birds are at risk of extinction due to climate change. The data collected from this count could provide additional information to drive stronger conservation actions and policies. The CBC is not limited to avid birders, though. Everyone is welcome to participate in the count, from experts to kids and families. Eleven circles are scheduled across Nebraska spreading from Omaha and Lincoln west to Scottsbluff.

“This is a great event for volunteers of all ages and experience levels,” said Jason St. Sauver, the Lincoln CBC coordinator.
