Spring Creek Prairie Hosts Bird Watching Opportunities, Inaugural Owl Outing

At Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center (springcreek.audubon.org/events), autumn is a wonderful time to watch and enjoy birds before they migrate away and temperatures cool off. The center has birding events for everyone to enjoy this season.

In addition, the first October event is the fourth annual BIG SIT to be held on Sunday, October 13. The BIG SIT is a national community science project to help scientists count birds during migration. It’s sometimes called the tailgating party of birding due to its sedentary rules of simply sitting all day in one spot, eating and chatting with friends, and counting all the birds that fly by. The event will be held all day but participants are welcome to join in at any time.

Shortly after the BIG SIT is Spring Creek Prairie’s final guided bird walk of the year. This free event takes place on October 15 from 8 to 10 a.m. with one of Audubon’s bird nerds. All ages and abilities are welcome, and binoculars are available to borrow.

Finally, you can attend the first ever Owl Outing on Friday, November 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be an owl educational presentation, owl pellet dissection, a hooting contest, and more. This event is $10 per family.
