Jose J. Soto, vice president for access, equity and diversity at Southeast Community College, received the 2012 Hispanic Heritage Month Humanitarian Award Oct. 5 during a ceremony at the State Capitol.

Soto was honored by the Latino American Commission during the 6th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month State Commemoration at the second floor rotunda. A reception was held in the first floor café and courtyard.

Soto began working with the Hispanic community in Lincoln in 1979, first as a volunteer at the Hispanic Community Center. There he served as an interpreter and assisted with events. He has since interpreted for the court system and for various state and local agencies, including law enforcement, all for people with limited English proficiencies.
