Tobacco Free Lancaster County (TobaccoFreeLancasterCounty.org) would like to remind renters to ask their landlords about the smoking policy before signing a lease so that they can better limit their exposure to secondhand smoke.

Fortunately, for most people, exposure to secondhand smoke at home isn’t an issue. In fact, according to the 2020 Nebraska Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 93.7% of adults in Lancaster County don’t allow smoking in their home. That includes those who use tobacco products and those who don’t.

What a great norm for our community to have! However, sometimes when people are looking for apartments they don’t think to ask about smoke-free policies and end up increasing their exposure to secondhand smoke through walls, ventilation, cracks, plumbing, and more. Tobacco Free Lancaster County has an online database to connect those looking for smoke-free housing to property managers and owners that have great policies.

Funding for Tobacco Free Lancaster County is provided by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.
