Star City 6: Matt Collins

Oak Electric, Inc. (www.oakelectriccompany.com) is a locally owned, full service electrical contractor. Matt Collins is the Foreman at Oak Electric.

Tell us a little about your business. – Our company performs work on residential, commercial, and industrial projects. We are currently in the process of putting together a team of individuals who care about precision and craftsmanship and who can represent Oak Electric’s core values.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Competition. Some customers will call around looking for the lowest-priced electrician and that is not Oak Electric. We believe you get what you pay for. We will take a little extra time to ensure our craftsmanship is on par with our customer expectations and we refuse to use the cheapest products and lighting.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – They say that a referral is the best compliment and it truly is. Having a customer share my name or call me back for continued service work is very rewarding.

Tell us a little about your family. – My wife, Crystal, and I are blessed with 2 extremely active boys ages 10 and 16. Between music lessons, marching band, and football practices we still manage to find time to enjoy a day at the lake with our ski boat.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – That’s easy! Meeting my wife! My life had little direction before I met her and now my family is the most important thing to me.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – My dad used to say to me, “If you are going to do a job half-a**ed (or halfway) then don’t bother doing it at all!”

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Honest.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? – That’s a tough one, but I would have to say to be cloned or some other way to have two of me. I have a tendency to always say “yes, I can do this or that” and I find myself running out of hours in the day to get everything done and sometimes stretch myself too thin.

What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. One of our boys was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when he was only 4 years old. Since that day our lives were forever changed. For many years, we have participated in fundraisers and their annual Walk to Cure Diabetes.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Lincoln has so many great options, but I will have to go with Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill. Not only do they have a great menu, but I have always been impressed by the teamwork of their entire staff. Plus, they are also big supporters of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

What is your favorite movie? – I don’t necessarily have a favorite movie, but any good action movie that can keep me entertained for two hours is alright by me.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? – I am available by phone at (402) 440-5969 – call or text. Or visit our website at www.oakelectriccompany.com.
