Star City 6: Jordan Hamann-Heiser

Sartor Hamann Jewelers (www.sartorhamann.com) is a full-service, family-owned fine jeweler with deep roots in the Lincoln community dating back well over a century to when the company was founded here in 1905. Jordan Hamann-Heiser is Head Buyer at Sartor Hamann Jewelers.

Tell us a little about your business.

We pride ourselves in helping our customers find the perfect gifts for the most special times in their lives. This year marks our 111th anniversary of doing business here in Nebraska! We have 3 locations serving customers statewide and beyond, including a full-service jewelry manufacturing house in downtown Lincoln, a beautiful showroom at SouthPointe Pavilions, and another showroom in Grand Island, NE.

How did you get started in the business?

I’m a 4th generation Hamann and have been around the stores and staff my entire life. My dad always had gemstone books lying around the house and I loved to flip through them. I started at Sartor Hamann at age 14, wrapping Christmas gifts and cleaning jewelry during the holidays, and continued working there part-time through high school and college.  After I graduated from the University of Nebraska I moved to Carlsbad, CA and attended school at the Gemological Institute of America, receiving my degree in Graduate Gemology. Now I travel around the country buying and stocking our showrooms with beautiful pieces.

Tell us a little about your family.

I’ve been married to my husband Pat for 2 1/2 years and we are expecting our first child, a daughter, in March! My Sartor Hamann family is equally important, and being able to work with my grandfather and father every day, learning from them, is a treat.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?

I love to be outside working in my yard and planting. This spring, I spent Thursday mornings with the volunteers and staff at the Sunken Gardens and Hamann Rose Garden planting and preparing them for the summer crowds. My husband and I also love to travel; a few of our favorite spots are Arizona and Colorado.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Always be kind to everyone, no matter what. You never know what someone is going through in their life.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be?

If I wasn’t in the gemology/jewelry industry I would love to be in the farming industry!  Particularly plant horticulture and flower farming. I love the reward you get from planting something and then watching it grow and evolve into something beautiful and sustaining. Being able to harvest and share with others would be the cherry on top.

What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why?

Don Hamann, my grandfather, has always been passionate about the Lincoln community and we at Sartor Hamann love to give back to our amazing city. We are actively involved in numerous local non-profit groups, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the People’s City Mission. Don is a huge fan of supporting the arts in our community as well as our local parks, which includes organizations such as the Lied Center for Performing Arts and Lincoln Parks & Recreation.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It’s a World War II novel about young sisters trying to survive and save the lives of others. So good!

What is your favorite local restaurant?

MōMō Pizzeria & Ristorante.
