Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, has its origins in the end of World War I. On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allied powers and Germany, effectively ending World War I. The armistice went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, marking a significant moment of peace and the end of a devastating conflict.

In 1919, one year after the armistice, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day, with the intention of honoring the soldiers who had served in World War I. Armistice Day became an official holiday in the United States in 1938. However, after World War II and the Korean War, it became evident that a broader celebration was needed to honor Veterans from all U.S. military conflicts. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill officially changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day has continued to be observed on November 11th each year. It is a day to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of all American Veterans, living and deceased, who have bravely defended the nation in times of war and peace.
